Both Basketball squads were in action Tuesday night, both falling to West Texas A&M. The Men started out struggling again and again, it buried them in the end. The Ladies played a strong game until the end when they were overtaken by a Lady Buffalo second half that was unusually strong, as the Ladies were only down by 6 at the half then ended up getting completely run over in the second half. The Men continue to struggle from the field. For more on this here are the links to Lionathletics.com-

This Saturday is the Gold Out Game vs Eastern New Mexico. The Women start at 2 and the Men at 4, so get out to the Fieldhouse and support the both teams as they look to get back to making cases for being in the LSC tourament.

Looks like another strong set of Meets for both squads, hopefully this will prove fruitful come Conference Meet time. The LSC meet will be held in Canyon, Texas with West Texas A&M hosting it.
Just a few thoughts on the coaching candidates, these are the 4 that, to my knowledge are the frontrunners. 3 of them I know for sure have been interviewed. Mumme’s name has been more than just thrown out there, there is a strong lobby to bring him to Commerce. This is Ryan Ivey’s first hire and it is for the head Football Coach, so it will be hard right out of the gate. Again, any information is appreciated, as well as thoughts, opinions and debate that is respectful. That’s the purpose of this blog. Information and healty debate.

just a heads up, also have contacts on campus. three of the four candidates you mentioned were not interviewed.
Heard two of them were on Campus two weeks ago, right after Ivey was hired and the third was interviwed via phone. My source is very reliable. If you can get me the information, message me. Thanks.

i guess im also trying to figure out where this “strong lobby” for Mumme is coming from. your the only one i’ve heard even mention him as a possible candidate.
I am in the alumni assoication. Alums want him (Mumme), they know him as the guy who created the “basketball on grass” concept. Just come to an alumni dinner and listen to what the ex players and boosters are saying. They want him, they also think that with age comes wisdom, so they are partial to that. The younger alums want Carthel.

Rule #1 – Don’t listen to anything most if the former players from the late 80s say. Those guys are ridiculous and out of touch.
I keep trying to think about who the players would respond best to, and I just don’t see it being Mumme. As one of the previous posters said age isn’t something that shouldn’t be discounted. Of the four, Carthel would probably be my top choice, being he has been a part of the most success and has been around the conference for a long time. He already has those connections, and being able to tap his father’s brain would be a big plus as well. Except for the week Commerce plays West Texas obviously.
From a logical point you are probably right. We need a guy for the Long haul, and what if Mumme turns us around radically in 2-3 years and then another DI School comes calling? Carthel makes the most sense, but im still pulling for Mumme, for now.
As I stated a few days ago, this job is going to go to Hal Mumme, like it or not. I personally don’t think it’s a great hire, and I don’t even think it’s a safe hire. Morriss was a Mumme disciple, and look how that turned out. His “basketball on grass” sure produced a lot of wins in Commerce!!! They’ll hire Mumme no doubt, but the administration had better be prepared for even more fallout from alumni, when the same results are on the field. Remember, insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.
I personally think they should hire a younger coach with some enthusiasm. Find a young head coach at a lower level, or a successful coordinator at Div 2. Someone who would fire up the alums and recruit some talent to Commerce. ETSU is surrounded by talented football players! But it’s obvious the last three “old” coaches couldn’t get those kids to come play there. Carthel would be an ideal hire, IMO, but they won’t be able to get him. Why would he leave WT, where he’ll probably soon take over for his dad as HC, to come to Commerce? WT is a much better program, and I seriously doubt he even applied for the job. But that is the profile they should be looking for… A young coach who can fire up the fan base/alums, recruit some talent, and have the energy to build a winner.
Why ride an old mule, when you could break a young stallion?
Carthel has applied and was interviewed via distance. I know for a fact he applied just don’t know the interview details. Carthel is better for the long term future of the program.
And Morriss did not run the same offense Mumme does. He watered it down and ran a lot more. Mumme wins regardless as to where he is at when it comes to schools smaller than FBS.
